The council announced its intention to temporarily prohibit traffic on Woodcote Grove Road and surrounding areas starting from July 21, 2026.
Each phase will affect different sections of the road and side roads. The first phase of closures will affect Woodcote Grove Road, Meadow Rise, Smitham Down Road, and The Horseshoe. These roads will be closed from July 21 until July 27.
The second phase will see the closure of Woodcote Grove Road from outside number 96 to its junction with The Wend and The Chase, as well as Fairfield Way, The Vale, and Grove Wood Hill. This phase will last from July 27 until August 3.

The third phase, running from August 3 to August 10, will affect Woodcote Grove Road from its junction with The Wend and The Chase to outside number 22, as well as The Chase, The Wend, Warwick Road, and Howard Road.
For the final phase, Woodcote Grove Road from outside number 22 to outside number two will close, along with Bramley Avenue, The Avenue, and Woodmansterne Road. This phase will last from August 10 until September 2.
Full list of diversion routes
During the work, diversion routes for vehicular traffic will be in place.
- Northbound traffic will be diverted via Farthing Way, Brighton Road, Banstead Road, and Foxley Lane.
- Southbound traffic will be diverted via Foxley Lane, Russell Hill Road, Purley Road, Brighton Road, Farthing Way, Brighton Road, and Lion Green Road.
The order for the closures will come into operation on July 21, 2026, and it is anticipated that the works will be completed as detailed above. However, the order will remain in force for 18 months.
There are exceptions to the restrictions. The restrictions will not apply to vehicles involved in carrying out the works, vehicles being used for fire brigade, ambulance, or police purposes, or for the purposes of a statutory undertaker in an emergency.
This includes emergencies such as the loss of gas, electricity, or water supplies to premises in the area, which necessitates bringing vehicles into a section of road to which the order applies.
The restrictions also will not apply to anything done with the permission of a police constable in uniform or a Civil Enforcement Officer.
Croydon Council has taken these steps to ensure the safety and efficiency of the gas main replacement works.
The works are part of a broader initiative to maintain and improve the gas mains infrastructure in the area.
Residents and commuters have been urged to plan their journeys, to avoid inconvenience during the closure periods.
