Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the pleasure of speaking to thousands of residents across Putney, Roehampton, and Southfields during the local election campaign.
Hearing your concerns, frustrations, and hopes is the most important part of my job. These conversations remind me what matters most to our community: reliable transport, safe housing, strong local services, and youth opportunities. Thank you to everyone who took the time to chat with me.
Local elections
The local election result was not what Labour had hoped for. Wandsworth Council is now under No Overall Control, with the Conservatives holding 29 seats to Labour’s 28. This means they retain control of the cabinet and committees. While disappointing, this outcome reinforces how finely balanced our borough is, and how vital it is that we keep making the case for progressive change.
Huge congratulations to all newly elected councillors, regardless of party. Having served as a councillor for seven years, I know how exciting it is to be elected and how hard it is. I also thank everyone who stood as a candidate. Our democracy depends on people willing to step up, and Wandsworth is richer for your participation.

Conservative leader hails 'great result' despite no overall control
Looking ahead, I will work constructively with the council to deliver for Putney across several key local priorities. Transport remains a top issue, with residents consistently raising Putney High Street congestion and bus reliability. I recently led a parliamentary debate on Hammersmith Bridge. With the National Structures Fund now open, Hammersmith and Fulham Council can apply for funds to reopen the bridge to buses and cars, which would significantly relieve Putney's traffic. Funding decisions are expected this autumn.
Alton Estate Renewal
Delivering the Alton Renewal project in Roehampton is another once-in-a-generation opportunity to invest in high-quality homes. This must be done directly with residents, ensuring transparency, fairness, and long-term community benefits. I will also continue to campaign for more social housing alongside increased investment in local youth and family centres.
Kings Speech and Brexit
I spoke during the King’s Speech debate to support the European Partnership Bill and an EU reset to repair Brexit's economic damage. I also backed raising the social media age to 16, and highlighted international crises, including the famine in Sudan and the illegal occupation of the West Bank.
The King announced a very substantial programme of 37 new laws, which have been very over-looked in all the leadership coverage, but are very good news and show that we are delivering what we said we would do in the General Election and it is major change for the better for us in South West London. This includes leasehold reform, cladding action, social housing investment, and energy independence to lower utility bills. I will work hard to ensure our community benefits.
Elections come and go, but my commitment to Putney is constant. My door is always open, and I am always listening.
