Sutton results local elections - Liberal Democrat majority

Once again, the Liberal Democrats have maintained a majority control over the council, securing a total of 51 seats out of a possible 55.

This is a remarkable 22-seat leap from the results of the 2022 election, in which the party had councillors in 29 out of the 55 seats.

The results will see its reign of control over the local council since 1986 continued.

Despite a somewhat predictable election result, the stakes were raised just that little bit higher this time around, with a degree of challenge posed by Reform UK candidates contesting for seats.

It was the St Helier West ward that was the last to have its results declared in the early hours of the morning (May 8), proving to be one of the more interesting outcomes of the Sutton election.

Two Reform UK candidates, Cllr Janey Gould and Cllr Alison Long, were elected as two of the three ward councillors for the ward, with Cllr Joicy Antini of the Liberal Democrats as the final councillor.

Both Cllr Gould and Cllr Long were seen embracing after the declaration, as surrounding Reform UK colleagues cheered and clapped.

The Conservatives, who have been the long-term opposition party within Sutton Council, secured no councillors in this election, losing their previous 20, with the Christian Peoples Alliance and Green parties also missing out.

A single seat was secured by both the Labour party and Independent.
