Outstanding contributions made by young people in Sutton were recognised in a new awards scheme.
Cheam and Sutton Rotary launched its first Young Citizen Awards on April 28. The ceremony took place at the Sutton Volunteer Centre in Wallington and honoured 16 young people, including scouts, air cadets, sea cadets, young carers and young commissioners.
Each nominee was celebrated for their achievements, including the Marsden March, organising quiz nights, and mentoring others.

One Sea Cadet became the first in her unit in 20 years to achieve the rank of Petty Officer, while other nominees helped digitalise processes for their groups or supported younger members through mentoring. Some young carers balanced daily family responsibilities with advocacy work, helping schools and teachers better understand the needs of young carers.
Helen Smith is the award organiser of Cheam and Sutton Rotary, which has the motto “Service above Self”, and she said she hopes to establish the Young Citizen Awards as a regular event, continuing its mission to celebrate and encourage exemplary youth in Sutton.
The evening left all guests proud and inspired.
