The contents of a historic hotel in South Croydon are going under the hammer next month.
Pro Auction announced that it will hold a major live and online auction selling the entire contents of the former Selsdon Park Hotel in New Addington in South Croydon.
The historic 19th-century hotel, set within the grounds of a 200-acre estate, opened for a brief period in 2023 under the name Birch Selsdon Hotel following an 18-month refurbishment costing £15 million.
The hotel operated for only a few months before shutting down due to financial difficulties and uncertainty over the site's long-term future.
In January 2024, administrators were granted a 12-month extension to sell the 200-acre estate, sparking renewed debate among locals, some hopeful the site could attract investment and revitalise the area, while others feared it may instead face redevelopment for housing, threatening its natural landscape.
Now the contents of the hotel, which features 181 guest bedrooms with furniture in near-immaculate condition, will be auctioned off on April 15.
Auctioneer Simon Rose said this was an “exceptionally rare opportunity” due to the short operational window and the bespoke provenance of the furnishings.
Many pieces were crafted from timber cut directly from the estate, making them unique and locally sourced.
The estate dates back to the Anglo-Saxon era and was granted to Sir John Gresham by Henry VIII in 1538.
After passing through several private owners, it was transformed in 1924 when Allan Doble Sanderson expanded the manor into a hotel.
