A suspect has been arrested after reports of children being followed home from school in Sutton.
Police said in a letter to residents yesterday (February 1) that multiple reports had been made from Cheam, North Cheam and Stonecroft.
An image of a possible suspect in one of the reports is said to be circulating on social media.
However Sergeant Ricky Ketman wrote that while the alleged offences are similar, police do not think they are all linked.
While officers are expected to be making extra patrols, he warned children to be “vigilant” and avoid having phones on display.
The full letter reads: “We have been made aware of several reports of children being followed when walking home from school around the Cheam, North Cheam and Stonecot areas.
“We are also aware of an image circulating on social media of a potential suspect from one of these reports.
“Whilst there are similarities with these reports, they are not all linked.
“Due to this being an ongoing investigation details can not be shared however one suspect is currently in custody.
“Police will be conducting additional reassurance patrols in the area during school start and end times.
“Please be responsible with information shared on social media.
“Please also advise [your] children to be vigilant when walking home and to avoid having their mobile phones on display.”
