A much-loved community pub in Wimbledon is hosting a free event for anyone spending Christmas Day on their own.

The Alexandra on 33 Wimbledon Hill Road will open once again for its annual free Christmas event on December 25 for anyone spending the day alone, offering a complimentary meal with no questions asked.

This tradition first began a decade ago in 2015 when the pub began inviting people to join them for the festivities in a heartwarming gesture of community spirit.

Guests arriving solo can drop in any time between midday and 3pm on December 25, take a seat at the table, and enjoy a roast-packed plate, crackers, pudding seconds and a chat.

Landlord and landlady Mick and Sarah, who are described by locals as “possibly the best on the planet”, say the day is about creating a place where no one has to feel alone at a time that can be especially poignant.

A post on the Alexandra’s website reads: “If you find yourself without loved ones around the table, we’re here.

"It’s completely on us, no catches, just community at its most heartwarming.”

The business has stressed that the event is focused on solo visitors, with families and groups advised to visit on other days during the festive season.

For anyone wishing to support the effort, charity boxes will be on the bar throughout the festive season, with every contribution including card donations going directly towards “stuffing stockings and filling plates”.
