"One moment, I was the busiest doctor in the hospital. Next, I was the most serious patient."
Nearly 25 years ago, my life changed in an instant. While reviewing critically ill patients, I suddenly collapsed. A bleeding thyroid cyst had blocked my airway. My colleagues intubated me on the corridor floor before rushing me into surgery. The bleeding recurred, requiring a second operation. By the end, I had lost three-quarters of my thyroid and spent a week on a ventilator in intensive care.
That near-fatal event transformed not only my health but my entire understanding of medicine.
The hidden thread behind modern diseases
Over decades in practice, I began to see a common thread linking diabetes, heart disease, fatty liver, dementia and even cancer, a condition known as metabolic syndrome.
At its root lies insulin resistance, when the body’s cells stop responding properly to insulin. This single disturbance can lead to high blood sugar, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol levels, and weight gain.
The good news is that by addressing insulin resistance, we can often improve all these conditions simultaneously, reducing medication, restoring energy, and rekindling vitality from within.

Reversing my own metabolic crisis
After surgery, even walking to the station left me breathless. I began by walking around the block, then gradually farther. Those humble beginnings led to a loss of eight inches around my waist, from 40 to 32 inches, and a renewed sense of energy. Step by step, those walks turned into runs. I have now completed over 120 marathons, most of which I ran after turning 60.
I don’t share this to suggest everyone should run marathons, but to show what’s possible when we make sustainable changes. Real food, regular movement, good sleep and balanced stress truly are powerful medicine.
Lessons from the front line
After treating over 50,000 patients in 45 years, I’ve seen firsthand how lifestyle changes can transform health. Many people naturally improve their blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels while reducing their reliance on medications. Medicine is powerful, but the body itself possesses remarkable healing capabilities when provided with the right support.
