20 people evacuated a building in Tooting with a number treated for smoke inhalation as fire crews tackle a huge blaze.

12 fire engines and around 80 firefighters were called to Woodley Close in Tooting at around 8.30am this morning (Monday, May 20).

Two flats on the first and second floors of a three-storey residential block are currently on fire.

Part of the roof is also alight.

The fire is producing “a significant amount of smoke” and people in the area are advised to keep their windows and doors closed.

Drivers are being encouraged to avoid the area and to expect traffic disruption, including on London Road near to the Arnold Road junction.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade said: “Twelve fire engines and around 80 firefighters have been called to a fire on Woodley Close in Tooting.

“Two flats on the first and second floors of a three-storey residential block are alight.

“Part of the roof is also alight. Approximately 20 people left the building before firefighters arrived.

“A number of people have been assessed for smoke inhalation on scene.

“The fire is producing a significant amount of smoke and people in the area are advised to keep their windows and doors closed.

“Drivers are asked to avoid the area and to expect traffic disruption, including on London Road near the junction of Arnold Road.

“The Brigade's 999 Control Officers have received around 15 calls about the fire. 

“The Brigade was called at 0837. Crews from Tooting, Wimbledon, Norbury, West Norwood and surrounding fire stations are at the scene.

“A 64 metre and 32-metre turntable ladder are also attending the scene.

“The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.”
