SOUTHEND United defender Harry Taylor feels he is ending a ‘miracle’ season with the best award possible.

Taylor was voted player of the season by his Blues team-mates.

And he was delighted to receive recognition from those around him.

“The other players are the ones you’re working with day in, day out, and they see your ability the most,” said Taylor.

“I personally think it’s the best award you can get so I’m really pleased.

“It’s been a very enjoyable season for me.

“I’ve enjoyed playing in front of the Southend fans home and away every week and we’ve got a good group of lads and great staff so it’s been really good.”

The Shrimpers ended the National League season sitting ninth in the table.

And Taylor believes such a high finish was a huge achievement for Kevin Maher’s side given the number of issues they were forced to overcome, including a 10 point deduction.

“When we got the points deducted the first thought in your head is survival,” said Taylor.

“To be going for play-offs on the last day was a miracle really and it’s a testament to the whole club.”

Blues’ problems also prevented them from signing new players.

But that led to Taylor reverting from midfield, where he played last season, to right-sided centre-back.

And the 26-year-old excelled in his new role.

“I can play in multiple positions but I think centre-back’s probably my favourite to play,” said Taylor.

“With the way we press and the way we work off the ball, the players around me make it easier.”
