A busy road in Balham has been cordoned off by police after a suspicious item was reported.

Emergency services were called to Balham High Road at around 2pm today (February 6).

The road was closed off to the public as the incident was dealt with. 

Balham High Road both ways between Elmfield Road and Marius Road has since reopened. 

A spokesperson for Metropolitan Police said: “Police have been called to Balham High Road after reports of a suspicious item found there; cordons have been put in place while officers carry out an assessment.”

Full AA maps statement says: “Road closed and delays due to police incident on A24 Balham High Road both ways between Elmfield Road and Marius Road.

“Detour in operation - bus Routes Affected: 155,249,355.”

A spokesperson for London Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 2.11pm today (6 February) to reports of a suspicious item in Balham High Road, Balham.

“We sent an incident response officer, a command support vehicle and members of our Hazardous Area Response Team to the scene.

 “We responded alongside colleagues from the Metropolitan Police and London Fire Brigade.

“Fortunately there were no patients and the incident has now been stood down.”
