London’s “first” Japanese style handroll bar in Brixton Market has been named as one of London’s top 100 restaurants.

Temaki, based in London’s Brixton Market, first opened its doors in 2021, serving a range of Japanese cuisine.

It has been named in the 2024 Top 100 Restaurants List by SquareMeal, which has this year featured 14 restaurants across south London.

The list is comprised based on “in house opinions” alongside the votes from real diners to make up a list of London’s best rated restaurants.

It features a broad range of restaurant types, from Japanese cuisine to Modern European, to bring together an “all-star cast” of the best places to eat in London.

The list comes after what was described as a “challenging few years” by SquareMeal, as the hospitality industry continues to face economic strains as a result of the effects of Covid and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

This year marks the third year running that the restaurant has been featured in SquareMeal’s Top 100 London Restaurants list since first opening, and this year the restaurant made the top 35 restaurants to be featured in the list.

The restaurant presents an industrial-feel décor in the modern setting of the market, and offers guests a range of small plates, sushi and handrolls inspired by flavours of Japan.

The business is also believed to be a first for London, as the capital's “first” Japanese style handroll bar, with some of its popular dishes including Monkfish Karaage and the newly added Chicken Katsu.

The dishes are created by head chef Mark, who trained in Japanese cooking before joining the Temaki team.

Alongside its regular menu, Temaki also offers seasonal menus including an upcoming Valentine's Day menu.

Drinkers can also enjoy a range of alcoholic drinks, which includes wines, beers, spirits, crafted cocktails and, in true Japanese fashion, a menu of Sake – a Japanese rice wine.

Founder A.M. Dupee described feeling “excited” and “honoured” to be named in the list for the third year running, and added that the success was “testament” to the staff and the restaurant’s “loyal diners.”

Temaki founder, A.M. Dupee, said: "We couldn't be more excited to be featured in SquareMeal's Top 100 Restaurants in London list for the third year in a row.

“To be situated amongst some of our favourite restaurants is truly an honour. It's a testament to our fantastic team and loyal diners who continue to return time and time again."
