Former Crystal Palace chairman Mark Goldberg believes Simon Jordan does not get the credit he deserves as he prepares to sell the club eight years after taking control.

Jordan announced his intention to leave last Wednesday after Palace were awarded just £700,000 for teenage starlet John Bostock by a football league tribunal - an amount he labelled as the equivalent to "a packet of crisps."

Goldberg, who took control of the club for a year in 1998, also said he thought the time was right for Jordan to move on.

"It's probably a sensible decision for him to put the club up for sale," he said.

"He has done what he can for Crystal Palace and done a wonderful job and possibly he feels he doesn't get the appreciation for what he has done.

"As a Palace fan and somebody that had my fingers burnt for the club I think he has done a fantastic job.

"But he is facing an unending battle to please people, the players, the fans and the manager and I think it's a task that's almost impossible and he comes across so many problems along the way with things in football that are out of our control."

Jordan is rumoured to have put as much as £39m into the club he has supported since childhood, but Goldberg feels that without a new cash injection it will be difficult for the SE25 outfit to break into the Premiership.

He said: "You can see that Crystal Palace is a club that without the sort of money and investment that the billionaires can bring you just cannot compete with the top clubs in the Premiership.

"I think he had realised that he put his heart and soul and a lot of money into the club and he hasn't seen the rewards.

"You are in football because you are passionate about football. He has been chairman for the club he is passionate about and if he thought his work was being appreciated then maybe he would hang in there.

"He feels the way the players salaries have spiralled out of control it's too difficult a task for him to manage all on his own.

"Maybe if there was a group of investors with him he would stay on but it's a big job for one man."

Goldberg also slammed the FA's decision not to step in and support Palace over the Bostock affair.

He said: "They go to tribunal and unfortunately the big clubs take advantage of the smaller clubs position and you think you are going to get support from the FA but it doesn't work that way.

"All these things end up frustrating you. You could be putting your money and investment and time into a business that gives you rewards on a day to day basis."

In a poll on our website we asked who you thought was the best Palace chairman in recent times? You voted: Jordan 57.45%(27 votes), Noades 23.40% (11), Goldberg 19.15% (9).
