A 47-year-old from Sunbury has been arrested after a man shouted racist abuse outside a convenience store because it was shut.

The incident happened outside the Co-op in Sunbury Cross Parade, Staines Road West, at about 9:40am on July 11.

Police were sent to the shop after CCTV operators noticed a heated argument developing between a member of staff and another man outside.

The member of the public ran off as officers approached and the employee claimed he had become aggressive and started shouting racist abuse because the shop was closed due to the shutter being broken.

The man was later arrested on suspicion of racially-aggravated harassment. He was interviewed and released on bail while investigations continue.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward. In particular, they are keen to hear from an elderly woman who was seen on CCTV pushing a shopping cart and stopping to watch the argument.

Anyone with information should call Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222 quoting reference SL/08/2966.
