A Battersea pupil who survived a 30ft fall while on a school trip was not drunk according to a senior teacher.

John Hardy, second master at Emanuel School, Battersea Rise, has denied reports that pupil Su Cangatin-Ripley had been drinking before falling from a second floor window of a Venetian hotel at the weekend.

The 16-year-old tumbled from the ledge at Hotel Cristallo in the early hours of Saturday morning bouncing off a canopy directly below the window - which doctors believe saved her life.

She suffered head, chest and stomach injuries but is now off the critical list and has been moved out of intensive care onto a normal ward.

Mr Hardy said: "The children had just come back from doing a concert about 11pm and had gone to their rooms.

"We think Su was leaning out the window, possibly smoking a cigarette, when she fell two storeys and ended up in hospital.

"She's a lucky girl. If she didn't hit the canopy it would have been much more serious.

"We contacted the parents in the early hours and they flew out in the morning. Her parents are with her and she is due to come out of hospital tomorrow.

"She is suffering from bruising but she hadn't been drinking and was not drunk, and there was no party."

Mr Hardy added the teen should be flying home with her mum today or tomorrow.
