It seems Sutton may soon have its own husband of the year.

Chris Laws, who has lived in the borough for five years, has made it on to the shortlist for Eve magazine and Nivea for Men's Husband of the Year competition.

He was nominated in the heroic husband category by his wife Kathryn, who suffers from a rare auto immune disease.

Mrs Laws said she owed the world to her husband: "I have intestinal vasculitis, which is very rare as only three people in the world have been diagnosed with it. It isn't curable and I've had six operations.

"I had to have my colon removed in an emergency operation in 2006."

She said she was diagnosed with the disease before her husband proposed.

"So many guys would've got out then. But he accepts me as beautiful - despite my bag and scars."

Mr Laws has also put aside his love for adventure sports to take care of his wife.

She said: "When we first met we started skiing and we were really into abseiling and mountain trekking and he was kind of looking forward to an active lifestyle.

"But I can't do that yet, because my medication makes me tired."

Mr Laws said he was pleasantly surprised to find he had been nominated.

He said: "We've been through a lot, but it has just made us stronger."
