Andy Murray is hoping his recently added muscle mass will power him to the later stages of Wimbledon.

Murray, who has been criticised for his lack of stamina in the past, has forced his body through a rigorous workout to prepare for battle at SW19.

And after his straight sets dismissal of Fabrice Santoro, the Scot revealed he was pumped up for the occasion.

Murray said: "I've really been working on my upper body strength for the last year.

"I started doing chin-ups with a 20-kilo weight attached to me around my waist.

"When I was 16 and 17 you need to be careful as you're obviously growing a lot.

"But now I'm getting in the gym a lot and spending less time on the court.

"I measured my body fat at Queen's, and I was 6.5% body fat, which is not bad.

"But I don't think I'll ever get as muscular as Nadal."

Murray produced an array of eye-catching strokes to ease to a 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 victory over his French opponent.

But he dismissed talk of over-playing for the Centre Court crowd.

He added: "It's fun to be out there but I'm not wanting to play fun points to keep everyone happy.

"I just wanted to win the match as quickly as possible."

Murray now moves on to play Belgian Xavier Malisse in round two, and the Scot is expecting a tough encounter.

He revealed: "He's a very talented player.

"He probably isn't playing as well as he did when he made the semis here.

"But he is still a dangerous opponent and can play very well on grass."
