Operation Trident detectives are appealing for witnesses after an exchange of shots in Thornton Heath.
Residents called police after hearing about five shots at 2.10am on Saturday in Beulah Road, Thornton Heath.
No one was injured in the incident although a red Renault parked nearby had its rear windscreen shattered.
Detective Constable Donna Caesar, from Trident's South Central Shootings Team, said: "We believe that there were a lot of people in the area at the time due to a nearby barbecue party.
"We are appealing to anyone who attended the party or was in the area at the time to contact us."
The Trident South Shootings Team can be contacted on 0208 785 5850 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
