A gang member who beat, robbed and threatened to shoot rail passengers has been jailed for three-and-a-half years.

Kingston Crown Court heard on Friday how James Laywood, of Bedfont Avenue, Feltham, punched a man to the floor and then stomped repeatedly on his upper body leaving him with cuts, bruising and a black eye, before taking a mobile phone, credit cards, Oyster card and £25 cash.

The 15-minute ordeal only came to an end when the victim pushed Laywood, 22, out of the train doors as it stopped at St Margarets station.

In the second robbery Laywood was recorded on a mobile phone saying, "You're going to get shot", after the victim dialled 999 as he got on a train at Teddington and the operator recorded the call.

Prosecutor Geoff Monday told the court: "The victim says, I don't want to get shot'. Mr Laywood then said, Sit down or you will get shot'."

Laywood, who pleaded guilty to two charges of robbery, threatened to force the victim off the train at Twickenham and Richmond stations so he could march him to a cash point to take money from his accounts.

However the defendant and other gang members got off the train at Sheen and took bank cards, a mobile phone, iPod, watch and bag, with the victim resisting being forced off.

Yusuf Nur, of Chaucer Avenue, Richmond, who was also part of the gang, admitted assault with intent to rob and common assault following two separate incidents.

Nur, 22, broke a victim's tooth during one attack and four days later attempted another robbery but lashed out when the passenger challenged him and punched the victim.

All the incidents took place between December and January.

The duo were each jailed for three-and-a-half years.
