A distraction burglar stole £850 for an elderly woman after pretending to check the drains in her house.

The 85-year-old was targeted by the man at her home in Chertsey Lane, Staines, between 12.30pm and 12.43pm on May 24.

She opened the door to the man, who said her drains were blocked and he had come to check them for her.

The woman then showed him around the property and while she did so the man stole £850 in cash and £50 in gift vouchers before fleeing the scene without carrying out any work.

Detective Constable Carolyn Cleeve, who is leading the investigation, said: "This was a sickening offence where the suspect has ruthlessly exploited the kindness and trust of a defenceless elderly woman.

"Distraction burglary is such an appalling crime because the offenders specifically target the elderly and vulnerable and, as in this case, often get away with large sums of cash.

"Given the date and time of the offence I feel sure someone must have seen or heard something and I would urge anyone with any information to contact Surrey Police immediately."

Anyone who witnessed the incident or with any information should contact DC Cleeve on 0845 125 2222, quoting reference RM/08/1136, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
