Four fire engines and 25 firefighters were called to the scene of a house fire in Purley - believed to have been started by an extractor fan.

The fire happened on Saturday (January 7) in a house in Highfield Road in Purley, damaging half of the property roof.

Two adults and four children left the house before fire services arrived.

There were no reported injuries.

The fire is suspected to have been accidentally caused by a bathroom extractor fan.

Firefighters attended from three fire stations after the incident was first reported at 6.11pm.

The fire was under control by 7.38pm after the fire was attended by firefighters from Purley, Croydon and Wallington fire stations.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to a house fire on Highfield Road in Purley.

“Half of the roof of the semi-detached property was damaged by fire.

“Two adults and four children left the house before the Brigade arrived.

“There were no reports of any injuries.

“The Brigade was called at 1811 and the fire was under control by 1938. Firefighters from Purley, Croydon, and Wallington fire stations attended the scene.

“The fire is believed to have been accidental and caused by a bathroom extractor fan.”
