A 150-year-old tree which was due to be felled today has been saved at the eleventh hour thanks to local residents and the Croydon Guardian.
It follows a story we ran earlier this week about a tree in Harold Road, Upper Norwood which was set to be pulled down for developers to make way for garages.
The council had given permission for Townplot Plc to remove the tree as it was not protected but residents were outraged and started a campaign to save it.
As a result the leader of the council, Mike Fisher, asked Coucnillor Robert Askey to investigate the matter and it seems an arrangement has been agreed.
Townplot will now retain the tree in its position and build the grages around it on the plot.
Campaigner Sara Carr is delighted and says it was only right that the council made all the effort they could to save it.
She said: "I feel overjoyed that this wonderful tree has been saved and I would like to thank everyone who helped make this possible."
