This is not just any Marks and Spencer. This is a brand new, eco-friendly, flagship Marks and Spencer's and it opens in Colliers Wood next month.

The new store will open its doors to the public for the first time on Thursday, May 1 - the first flagship M&S to open in the capital for nine years.

In line with the company's Plan A - a 100-point, five-year eco plan which involves M&S working with its customers and suppliers to combat climate change, reduce waste, safeguard natural resources, trade ethically and build a healthier nation - the branch in Merton High Street will boast a number of green credentials.

Inside the 100,800 sq ft store, situated next to Sainsbury's in Colliers Wood, will be a number of water saving features. These will include dual flush toilets and self-closing taps, which will be fitted both in the staff and customer facilities.

The store's escalators and lighting is also set to be energy efficient, with movement sensors helping to save energy.

Cycle racks will be installed in the grounds of the store to encourage employees to cycle to work rather than take the car.

And 80 per cent of all construction waste materials used to create the store have already been recycled.

As well as a collection of fashion items and a food hall, the branch will have a home department as well as a technology department.

Two M&S cafés and a deli bar will also be on site for hungry and thirsty shoppers with Fairtrade tea and coffee on sale.

The store's manager Sarah McCulloch said: "Colliers Wood is a fantastic location for our brand new M&S, which is set to provide customers and staff with the chance to shop and work in an inspirational environment."
