Giant inflatable tentacles, a lizard and eyeballs have popped up around Croydon.

Visitors to the town centre can spot eight installations on show for a week.

Until Thursday (August 18), creations from company Designs In Air will be visible on buildings around Croydon.

The stunt, by the Croydon Business Improvement District (Croydon BID), aims to attract people back to the town centre.

The eight installations are: a paintbrush at Fairfield Halls, a rocket at AMP house in Dingwall Road, a lizard at the Ruskin Square car park, monsters on the LSBU building in Wellesley Road, eyeballs at Barclays in the High Street, a Pencil in the High Street, a beanstalk on Croydon Town Hall and tentacles from the Optivo offices in the High Street.

Matthew Sims, chief executive of Croydon BID, said: “Our high streets need something different.

"They need creativity, innovation, and a reimagining. Unexpected Croydon brings together a host of incredible art installations, bringing to life key parts of our town centre to attract people with a free trail that will enthral all ages at a time when we need a little light relief.”

Luke Egan, director at Designs in Air said the company wants to make the work a “more surreal and colourful place”.

He said: “Our sculptures are often site specific and instantly transform everyday scenes into strange new ones.

“We hope to get people to look up from their feet and phones and raise a chuckle or at least an eyebrow.

"Our sculptures can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike, and although our designs are highly technical, it’s not high art, but it is high-up art.

"The great thing is everyone gets to see our work for free.”

There will also be the chance to win a £100 Boxpark gift card by sharing pictures of the inflatables on Instagram and tagging @checkoutcroydon and #UnexpectedCroydon.
