Crystal Palace keeper Julian Speroni has targeted Championship glory with the Eagles as a way of forcing his way into the Argentina national squad, writes Simon Fitzjohn.

The Buenos Aires-born stopper has been a key part of the Eagles' surge up the table since the arrival of Neil Warnock.

But Speroni admits he needs to be strutting his stuff at the highest level if he is to force the selector's hand.

Speroni said: "I'd be lying if I said I didn't care about playing for Argentina.

"I was involved with the Under-20s and Under-21s and I loved it.

"My first target though is to get Palace in the Premiership.

"The competition for the goalkeeping places in the Argentina team is huge.

"I know if we can get into the Premier League then I would have a chance.

"I'm not saying it would be impossible otherwise but I would certainly have a better opportunity."

Speroni is currently locked in contract talks with the Selhurst Park club as he attempts to thrash out his future.

But the former Dundee keeper has assured fans he has no intention of quitting the club.

He added: "We are talking.

"We are not close to a deal yet but there is plenty of time.

"I would love to stay at the club.

"I'm settled - I'm comfortable with English football and things are going really well at the moment."
