A cyclist has died after being hit by a driver in a hit-and-run crash in the early hours of this morning.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene of the crash outside the BP garage in Mitcham Road at 3am.

London’s Air Ambulance also attended the scene but despite efforts, the cyclist died a short time later.

Officers are currently tracing the cyclist’s family to inform them of the incident.

The driver involved did not stop at the scene and police are looking to identify the car and its driver.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or captured it on dashcam to contact them quoting reference CAD 737/30May.

A spokesperson for Metropolitan Police said: “Detectives are appealing for witnesses and information following a fatal collision in Croydon.

“Police were called by the London Ambulance Service at 03:11hrs on Monday, 30 May to reports of a car in collision with a cyclist outside the BP garage on Mitcham Road.

“Officers and London’s Air Ambulance attended.

“Despite the efforts of emergency services, the cyclist died a short time later.

“Officers are in the process of tracing the man's next of kin.

“They are not releasing further details at present.

“The car failed to stop at the scene.

“Detectives from the Roads and Transport Policing Command are investigating and urgent enquiries are underway to identify the car and its driver.

“They would like to speak with anyone who witnessed the collision or captured it on dashcam.

“Anyone with information is asked to call the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 020 8285 1574 or via 101 quoting reference CAD 737/30May.”
