Crystal Palace boss Neil Warnock admitted to being a frustrated man after the Eagles were unable to bolster their squad ahead of the transfer window closing last night, writes Simon Fitzjohn.

Promotion-chasing Palace were knocked back in their attempts to strengthen, with Danny Webber thought to be among the targets.

And Warnock revealed his dismay at the lack of deals.

Warnock said: "We are disappointed not to have bought anybody in but we hit a few snags with situations.

"We knew by yesterday lunchtime that we couldn't do the deals we wanted to do."

The Palace manager also insisted that a move for Sheffield United hitman Webber, who flourished under Warnock at Brammall Lane, could still happen.

He added: "We have enquired about him over the last few days.

"We haven't spoken to the player at all but we did make enquiries to the club - but it is very, very early days."

The Eagles set about offloading as the window closed with squad players Stuart Green, Charlie Sheringham, Besian Idrizaj and David Martin shown the Selhurst Park exit door.

And Warnock admitted the departure of Martin, who joined Millwall in a £50,000 move, was the one that hurt most.

Warnock added: "I did not want David to go but it was a good bit of business.

"The £50,000 could rise to £100,000 and to have a 50 per cent knock on is good for us."

Besian Idrizaj's turbulent loan spell at the club from Liverpool came to an unceremonious end, with Palace terminating the deal. With the player apparently unwanted at Anfield, Warnock said he was heading straight out to an Austrian club.

Green, who had made 27 appearances since joining Palace in August 2006, had his contract cancelled.

The same fate befell 19-year-old Sheringham, son of former England international Teddy. He is now faced with the prospect of finding his sixth club after previous spells at Millwall, Tottenham, Ipswich Town and Charlton Athletic.
