The composting facilities provided by some boroughs have been blasted by the London Assembly's Green Party member Darren Johnson.
New Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) figures showed that in seven boroughs, less than one per cent of household waste was composted between 2006 and 2007.
Mr Johnson said: "London's residents are being let down by local authorities for not providing sufficient composting facilities and collection services.
"Unless boroughs start providing comprehensive collections as well as other composting facilities, they will continue to dump compostable waste in landfill and pass on rising landfill fines to taxpayers, or send it to incinerators adding to greenhouse gases and pollution."
In Croydon, 5.48 per cent of household waste was composted in 2007.
