A man and a woman were rescued from a house fire in North Cheam and taken to hospital after inhaling smoke.

Firefighters were called to the home on Gander Green Lane at around 10.30am yesterday.

Part of the ground floor was damaged by the blaze which was brought under control by 11.39am.

Another man escaped the building before the fire crews arrived and he was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

The other man and woman were rescued from the first floor by firefighters and sent to hospital.

Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Sutton, Mitcham and Wimbledon stations tackled the blaze.

It is believed that the fire was accidental and London Fire Brigade report that it was caused by a toaster.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “It’s really important that you always check toasters and other appliances are turned off and unplugged when not in use, unless they’re designed to be left on, like your fridge or freezer.

"Keep clutter to a minimum on your kitchen work surfaces especially near toasters and hobs as they can accidentally switch them on or catch fire."
