Snow, strong winds and temperatures dropping as low as minus 2C are predicted today and tonight.
Motorists have been warned to beware icy roads on the outskirts of London and other parts of England as the cold weather is set to continue over the weekend.
Council gritters have been out overnight salting roads while the AA has advised motorists to rethink journeys until the weather has settled.
A spokesman said: "Where possible, motorists should postpone car journeys until the weather clears, but those who do need to be out on the roads may find they need to cope with weather related hazards.
"Decreased visibility is one of those, so make sure you demist before you set off."
