Young's has lost its tradition and is turfing out its longest standing and most loyal customers with refurbishments to trendy gastropubs, it was claimed this week.

More Wandsworth residents complained about their treatment by Putney pub the Queen Adelaide, which has barred its cricket club and their wives and girlfriends.

The manager said his decision followed 14 months of antisocial behaviour from the group, but the club said they were victims of age discrimination.

This week a member of the cricketing club said the manager had refused to provide a gluten-free menu for him and 25 others in a society for people with gluten allergies. Instead, he told him he wanted to run an event called Let's Get Laid At The Adelaide.

Alan Petrides, 63, said: "I think he meant it as a joke, but I felt shunned. This wasn't to do with age but it was the same kind of thing."

Meanwhile, the former Wandsworth Councillor Pauline Brueseke, who has also been barred from the Putney Bridge Road pub, said she was offended by Young's accusations of antisocial behaviour.

She said: "I may have asked them to turn the music down, but I deny any antisocial behaviour. I once spoke to the manager about the price of the lemonade and he said to me, I don't know why you come here, you're always complaining'.

"They have lost a lot of money - on a Friday night we would probably spend about £500.

"Everything's changed since Sir John Young died. They've updated their image."

Chris Cobbold, who is organising the Battersea Beer Festival on Febuary 6-8, said Young's sacking of its draymen last year, and the sale of its brewery in Wandsworth Town marked a change in the company's vision.

"Younger people are in charge of it and they don't care about the older drinkers," he said. "They used to have a great tradition in Wandsworth but now it seems they don't care."

Young's said it would not comment on individual cases but a spokesman said: "Our aim at Young's is to provide all types of customers with an attractive and welcoming pub, friendly service and excellent food and beverages.

"We cater to a wide variety of ages, and enjoy a loyal customer base which spans a number of age groups."
