I read Diana Pilkington's article about a proposal for a 30m high wind turbine on the former Sleepeezee site in Morden with some incredulity.
Apart from the overpowering ugliness, it will not generate anything like its rated power - like most other mainland wind turbines.
Look at the weather in this area for the last two months - one or two windy and rainy days only during a typical windless anticyclonic weather pattern.
If the turbine requires a 10mph wind, say, to generate 100kW then if the wind speed is a gentle - 1mph like today - the power will drop hugely. Come on, Merton planners, don't follow the herd - be more ambitious and sensible.
Why not install a combined heat and power unit burning wood and some waste to provide heat and electricity?
Give over a few acres of Morden Park for a quick growing willow copse to provide the wood - no net carbon dioxide generation: it is all taken up to grow the wood (and no noise either).
