Four inmates committed suicide at Wandsworth Prison last year, a figure the jail watchdog has described as "shocking".

HM Chief Inspector of Prisons Anne Owers says the increase in Wandsworth and across London needed to be addressed.

Last year, 17 inmates took their own lives in London prisons, up from five in 2006, including one in Wandsworth that year.

A Department of Justice spokesperson said the deaths were not a result of overcrowding but Ms Owers says they show prisons are struggling to cope with vulnerable inmates.

The spokesperson said an updated suicide prevention strategy would come in to force in April.
