A teenager has been fined more than £500 for being on the high street in Thornton Heath while the country was in strict lockdown.

Omar Khamis was fined £584 for being outside of the place he lived on January 14, 2021 while London was under Tier 4 restrictions.

The restrictions saw people only allowed to leave home for essential purposes, such as to buy food and medical supplies, or for daily exercise.

Khamis, of Carolina Close in Stratford, was away from his home and in Thornton Heath high street “without reasonable excuse and other than as permitted by the regulations” in place to control coronavirus.

Khamis was found guilty at Westminster Magistrates' Court on January 5, 2022.

The 19-year-old was fined an initial £440 for the offence, an extra £44 to fund victim services and £100 for the costs of the Crown Prosecution Service.

He has until February 2 to pay the fine.
