A flood warning has been issued for part of south Essex as Storm Barra arrives.

The Met Office announced its yellow wind warning came into force from 9am on Tuesday, meaning disruption on the travel network is likely.

Wind speeds of up to 50mph are expected across south Essex in the next few hours.

The Environment Agency had five flood warnings in place as of 10am Tuesday, meaning flooding is expected.

They include the Essex coast at Coalhouse Fort near Tilbury.

It says flooding to coastal roads and footpaths is likely between 12pm and 4pm today.

Areas most at risk are Coalhouse Fort and car park, and the low lying land between the Fort and Coalhouse Point.

There are more than 30 flood alerts also in place, meaning flooding is possible.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has urged people to stay well back from the water’s edge and to dial 999 for the coastguard in any coastal emergency.

Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern said Storm Barra’s wind gusts and impacts “will be a notch down compared to Arwen”, which led to widespread power cuts on November 26 – some of which have not yet been restored.
