A person has died following a fire which destroyed a flat in Sutton.

The fire occurred in a  three-roomed flat on the second floor of a building in Relko Gardens.

One man was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews after suffering smoke inhalation.

Another person was found in a rear bedroom and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fire brigade was called at 7.21am and the fire was under control by 8.44am.

Fire crews from Sutton, Mitcham, Croydon and Wimbledon fire stations attended the scene.

A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade said: "Sadly, a person has died following a flat fire on Relko Gardens in Sutton.

A three-roomed flat on the second floor of the building was destroyed by fire.

"One man was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews after suffering from smoke inhalation.

"Another person was found in a rear bedroom and was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

"The Brigade was called at 0721 and the fire was under control by 0844.

"Fire crews from Sutton, Mitcham, Croydon and Wimbledon fire stations attended the scene.

"The cause of the fire is under investigation."

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: "Police were called at 7.30 on 8 November to support London Fire Brigade at a fire in flat on the second floor of a building in Relko Gardens, Sutton SM1. 

"Residents were evacuated and treated on scene by London Ambulance Service crews.

"One person was taken to hospital after suffering from smoke inhalation.

"Another person was found in a rear bedroom and was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Enquiries are ongoing."

A spokesperson for London Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 7.30am today (8 November) to reports of an incident on Relko Gardens, Sutton.

"We sent an ambulance crew, a medic in a car, an incident response officer, and our hazardous area response team.

"We treated one person at the scene and took them to a hospital. Sadly, another person died at the scene."
