A NEW adult education hub has opened giving residents opportunities to learn new skills, gain qualifications and improve their career options.

Based above the Tarner Children's Centre in Ivory Place in Brighton, the hub will deliver the council’s adult learning provision, which has been carefully tailored to meet the city’s current needs.

A wide range of classes and workshops are available, including courses in work and employability skills, pre-employment training for specific city industries, and classes to support wellbeing and personal development.

Most courses are free or low-cost for residents aged over 19-years-old, with all available for free for those who are unemployed or on a low income.

Councillor Hannah Clare, chairwoman of the children, young people and skills committee, said: “The new hub is a home for the city’s adult learning provision, supporting local people to improve life and work opportunities, as well as their health and wellbeing.

“Our adult learning programme is carefully targeted to meet the needs of local people and we’re working with our communities, local enterprise partners and other key stakeholders to ensure learning opportunities reach those who need it most.

“Whether you are unemployed, have been made redundant due to the pandemic or looking for a career change, an adult learning course could help you achieve your goals.

“We look forward to welcoming you to our new Adult Education Hub – either in person or online – and hope you find a course that inspires and supports you to reskill, refresh and restart your learning.”

Classes in e-learning skills are also available, along with everyday skills for those with learning disabilities and classes in starting a business and interview skills.

Family Learning courses, which allow families to learn subjects like maths and English for speakers of other languages, will also continue.

Sessions are available in the form of day and evening classes and workshops, with online and face-to-face options available.

The hub opened on Monday 20 September.
