There are major disruptions to rail travel in Croydon today (Saturday) following a fatality.

Thameslink has confirmed that an "emergency services incident" between Purley and East Croydon first reported at around 7am has resulted in a fatality.

Following the stopping of services from running between Gatwick Airport, Purley and East Croydon at around 8.30am, all lines are now back open.

Thameslink has warned, however, that services are still being "heavily impacted" by this morning's disruption, and that delays, alterations and cancellations all remain possible.

If possible, passengers are being advised to travel later today due to journey times being extended by around an hour.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police said: "Officers were called to South Croydon station at 7.02am on Saturday 11 September following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended, and sadly a man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."
