The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) have launched an investigation after a woman died after being hit by a police car in Brixton last month.

The incident happened around 11.20pm on Wednesday, June 9, when a double-crewed police car reportedly responding to an emergency collided with the 25-year-old woman involved.

The woman, who was on foot at the time, sadly died at the scene of the crash.

The IOPC confirmed she had since been formally identified and that her next of kin had been informed.

Additionally the indepdent body said that "HM Coroner has been contacted" and an inquest into the fatal crash would open "in due course".

"After we were notified by the MPS, we sent investigators to the scene and police post incident procedure to begin gathering evidence and an initial account was provided by the officers involved," an IOPC spokesperson added.

IOPC Regional Director Sal Naseem meanwhile offered her own statement on the case:

"My sympathies are with the woman’s family and everyone else affected by her death," she said.

"We have been in touch with the woman’s family to explain our role and we will keep them regularly updated.

"Our investigation is still in its very early stages and it is important that we establish all of the circumstances.

"We are already speaking to people who were in the area at the time and we would like to hear from anyone else who may have witnessed any part of this incident or the collision itself.

"We would also appeal to anyone who was driving there at the time and may have dashcam footage to contact us as soon as possible," Naseem added.
