Rescue teams involved in the search for an elderly woman missing from Horley have pulled a body from the River Mole this afternoon (Wednesday, July 7).

Surrey Police posted a short statement online around 4.30pm confirming a body had been found during their search efforts today.

A spokesperson for the county police force said that they believed the body was that of missing woman Maria Pereira, 72, from Horley.

"Following our missing persons appeal for 72-year-old Maria Pereira from Horley, we are sad to confirm that a body, believed to be Maria, was found in the River Mole this afternoon.

"Officers, along with Surrey Search and Rescue (SAR), have been searching the river area of Horley since Maria was reported missing on Saturday (3 July). Her body was found by specialist divers this afternoon (7 July).

"Her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers at this difficult time.

"Maria’s daughter would like to thank the local community for their support and efforts to help find her," the police statement read.

Surrey SAR meanwhile posted their condolences on Twitter.

"Our deepest sympathies go to Maria’s family and friends from the team," a spokesperson said.

Police said their investigation into what happened is continuing but the death is "not believed to be suspicious at this time".
