A former Brit School student has been named the Sound of 2008 after coming top in a BBC poll.

Soul singer Adele Adkins, a graduate of the Selhurst performing arts school, has been hailed as the new Amy Winehouse.

But she has said she wants to be known for her music rather than the type of wild lifestyle that made fellow former Brit school student Amy Winehouse so notorious.

Adele said: "I hope it's always about the music and I don't become scandalous and it takes me an hour to get out of my front door."

She beat other artists including Duffy, the Ting Tings, Glasvegas, Foals, and Vampire Weekend in the corporation's poll.

Last month the 19-year-old won the Brit Critics' Choice award which is designed to recognise a new British artist expected to find stardom in 2008 and Adele will officially collect the award at a ceremony on February 20.

The rising star, who performs under her first name and lives with her mum in Tottenham, was discovered after posting her tunes on her Myspace page.

Adele has already appear on Jools Holland's show and worked with Mark Ronson.

And she's now signed to XL Recordings joining names like The White Stripes, Dizzee Rascal and Lemon Jelly.

Among her friends on her Myspace page are Wimbledon artist Jamie T and the Noisettes.

Adele lists her influence as Dusty Springfield, Billy Bragg and Bjork.

Her debut album, 19, is due to be released early this year
