A church in Wallington has been praised for supporting vulnerable families with food packages throughout lockdown.

Wallington Christian Centre have been providing food for those in need since October 2020.

The church, based on Plough Lane, first launched 'Local Love' with Foresters Primary School, and in January this year the project expanded to High View Primary.

In total, 20 families are currently being supported with monthly food bag deliveries from the church - which is entirely funded by churchgoers as part of the TLG ‘Box of Hope’ initiative.

Mayor of Sutton, Councillor Trish Fivey, and the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Annie Moral, recently visited the church to thank them for their contribution to the community.

Mayor Fivey said: “The Covid pandemic has of course been a very difficult time for us all, but it’s also brought out the very best in our community.

"If it wasn’t for the Wallington Christian Centre, the lives of 20 families would be much more difficult right now.

"I was really honoured to visit the church and meet all the wonderful volunteers.

" I know that all of Sutton will join me to say a huge ‘thank you’ to the church for this wonderful project.”

David Gnanaseharam, Pastor at the Wallington Christian Centre, said: “We were all delighted to welcome the Mayor and Deputy Mayor to our church.

"The kind donations from our churchgoers have meant we’re able to support 20 families every month, but we’re hoping to scale up and start further initiatives to help the community.

"Of course, you don’t look for recognition, but as word has spread, we’ve had some really wonderful comments and the volunteers who run the food bags project deserve the praise.”
