A man who assaulted an elderly woman with a cricket bat in Reigate has been found guilty of her murder.

Guy Douglas Unmack, 46, appeared at Guildford Crown Court Wednesday (June 10) where he was found guilty of murder following a trial which lasted a week and a half.

As the Surrey Comet reported previously, he was arrested after assaulting 87-year-old Rosemary Hill on Warren Road in Reigate last summer (June 21).

As a spokesperson for Surrey Police described in further detail:

"His victim, 87 year-old Rosemary Hill was picking herbs on Sunday, 21 June 2020 when Unmack assaulted her by hitting her to the head with a cricket bat.

"Unmack was arrested shortly after the attack on suspicion of attempt murder. Following his arrest, he was assessed and deemed to be mentally unfit for interview and detention.

"He was placed under an involuntary order under Section 2 of the Mental Health Act and was subsequently moved to a secure hospital."

Rosemary, who was a retired teacher and described locally as a "talented musician", died several days later in hospital.

A post-mortem examination found the cause of death to be a "severe blunt force head injury".

Unmack, who was rearrested and charged once he was seemed fit to be interviewed in October, will be sentenced on June 24.
