Rob Ursell has returned to Carshalton Athletic just five months after leaving the club.

The former AFC Wimbledon midfielder joined the Robins in pre-season but, after failing to impress then-manager Dave Garland, was released without playing a senior match.

But the 25-year-old is back at Colston Avenue after current Robins chief Hayden Bird swooped for the talented midfielder last week.

And the wing wizard, who made his debut in Saturday's 2-1 victory over Maistone United, says he is ready to recapture the form that made him such at hit with the Dons earlier in his career.

He said: "On Saturday, I wasn't sure how I would get on because before that I had been playing at Chertsey Town, who play at a couple of levels below and, to be honest, I didn't play particularly well.

"But I proved to myself that I can still make a contribution at this level and I am eager to show everyone that."

Ursell insists he is delighted to return to Colston Avenue despite his acrimonious departure in the summer.

"To be honest, it was Hayden who brought me to the club and I never had a problem with him or any of the players - it was just Dave Garland, really, because I don't think he knew much about me.

"When he got the sack, I had an idea that Hayden might come back in for me because when I left he told me he wanted to work with me again.

"But when I got the phone call it still came a bit out of the blue, because he has been in charge for quite a while.

"It's great to be back playing and I am looking forward to repaying the faith Hayden has shown in me."

Ursell's return is a welcome boost for Bird after strike Luke Fontana left to join Tonbridge Angels.

The Robins, who had a 90th-minute Ben Wright strike to thank for securing the points, had earlier taken the lead through Phil Ruggles.
