A Tooting street food vendor has been chosen to compete in a vegetarian kebab competition.

Lebanese restaurant BEYRoots, in Broadway Market, will have the chance to flex its culinary muscles in a showdown to find the UK’s best vegetarian kebab.

‘The Battle of the ‘Babs’ is run by Quorn Foods and will see six shortlisted street food vendors from across the UK battle it out to be crowned as the new Kebab King or Queen.

Each street food vendor has entered a new dish featuring Quorn’s new ‘Makes Amazing Peri Peri Strips’ or ‘Turkish Style Kebab.’

The dishes will go head-to-head from April 29, where voting will open to the public on Quorn’s Instagram page.

The winner will get the chance to have their business and dish featured on a billboard in their hometown.

Quorn Foods will fund the display, as part of an initiative aimed at supporting local street food chefs who have been impacted by a year of lockdowns.

It is also hoped the billboard will encourage people to shop locally and buy from street food vendors.

BEYRoots is looking to impress with their homemade Lebanese khobez dish with halloumi and Quorn’s Turkish Style Kebab.

Tariq, the owner of the street-food stall, said: “We’re excited to compete against the five other talented street food vendors, it’s definitely going to be a tough competition!

"All our food is homemade and authentic to our Lebanese style – we had fun creating a new dish with Quorn’s Turkish Style Kebabs, they’ve got that extra kick of flavour that we hope our customers will love.”

Gill Riley, Quorn Marketing Director, added: “We’re thrilled to be supporting local street food vendors and their communities after such a challenging year for small businesses.

"Our hunt for the Kebab King or Queen has shown us how talented our street food vendors are in the UK and we’ve loved seeing their creative new dishes using our Quorn Makes Amazing range.”

The champion street food vendor will be announced on Quorn’s social media on May 5, 2021.
