A man in his 40s has died after reportedly being run over by another man following an altercation this afternoon in Walton.

Police were called to Church Street around 2.15pm to reports that an altercation had taken place between a group of men.

Police said one of the men then got into his car, a white 1 series BMW, and reportedly drove at two of the other men in the group.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics, a man in his 40s was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

A statement from Surrey Police confirmed his family have been informed.

A second man has been airlifted to hospital but police said he is expected to recover.

The owner of the vehicle, a 26-year-old man, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

Police said they are not presently seeking anyone else in connection with the incident.

A statement from Surrey Police read: "Officers are carrying out a number of enquiries to establish the full circumstances of the incident.  

"A cordon is in place behind the Marks and Spencer store and the car park is closed although the shop remains open.

"We would respectfully request that you avoid this area if possible while we continue to carry out further enquiries."

A further statement from Detective Chief Inspector Dave Springett said: “We understand that a serious incident like this has caused a lot of concern in the local community and we would like to reassure residents that we are doing everything we can to establish what has happened.

“From our initial enquiries, it appears that an altercation has taken place, leading to a physical confrontation, which then resulted in one of the group getting into his car and driving at two of the other men.

“Tragically, this has resulted in the death of one man and left another seriously injured and our thoughts are with their family and friends at this extremely difficult time.”

DCI Springett continued: “To assist the investigation, I would encourage anyone who has any information, particularly anyone who witnessed the incident, or anyone who has any mobile phone or dashcam footage, to come forward, quoting incident reference PR/P21083894.”
