Snow clearance crews have been busy in Merton as Storm Darcy continues to bring snow across the capital.

The predicted near freezing temperatures throughout the week mean gritting crews will be ready with 1,500 tonnes of salt in reserve to keep the borough moving.

Scott Edgell, SLWP General Manager, Veolia said: "Despite the ongoing pandemic, our gritting teams will be working hard to keep road conditions safe for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians."

All priority areas will be gritted first, including hospitals, nursing homes, public transport hubs and bus stops.

In the event of heavy snowfall or widespread ice, additional roads will be gritted in priority order after the main network of roads have been treated.

Councillor Mike Brunt, Cabinet Member for Local Environment and Green Spaces, Merton Council, said: “Our hard working crews are showing true grit and determination to keep Merton moving.

"Our Merton Together campaign has highlighted their efforts to keep these vital services running during the pandemic.

"I urge everyone in our community to take care when venturing out into icy conditions.

"Please plan any essential journeys you need to make during lockdown and tread carefully when the temperature drops during the winter.”
