A virtual event will be held to mark international Holocaust Memorial Day in Merton.

Merton’s civic event marks Holocaust Memorial Day ( January 27), which commemorates the 76h anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.

This year’s theme ‘Be the light in the darkness’ encourages everyone to remember the victims and survivors of genocide, and take a stand against prejudice and hatred today.

The annual day is to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi persecution during the Second World War, and the more recent genocides in Bosnia, Cambodia, Darfur, and Rwanda.

Merton’s Holocaust Memorial Day will feature contributions from representatives of the borough’s faith and belief forum, Wimbledon Synagogue, and political leaders.

It will be attended by the Mayor of Merton, councillors and representatives from the Met Police and London Fire Brigade.

The Mayor of Merton, Councillor Sally Kenny, said: “Holocaust Memorial Day is a chance for us all to pause and remember the millions of victims of the Holocaust and other genocides and honour the survivors.

"It is an important opportunity for everyone to reflect upon these terrible events and remember the horrors that prejudice, and hatred can lead to.

"Marking this day with a civic event is part of the council’s commitment to continue to work together with our communities to promote tolerance and unity.”

“In Merton we are proud to have a rich diverse community and Holocaust Memorial Day reaffirms our commitment to work continuously to eradicate hatred, prejudice, and discrimination in all its forms.”

The meeting will take place on Zoom, between the hours of 7pm to 9pm on Febuary 2.
