A driver who abandoned a crash on the M3 that left a woman fighting for her life has been found by a police dog and arrested.

PD Oakley was brought with officers from Surrey Police to the scene of the three-vehicle crash on the M3 Monday (January 18).

The crash, which saw a lorry, van and car collide near Junction 3 on the motorway and left one woman with serious injuries, happened around 6.30pm on Monday evening.

Attending the scene, police discovered one of the vehicles involved had been abandoned and sent Oakley into the nearby woods to track him.

"A short time later, Oakley found discovered the driver in woodland next to the motorway," a spokesperson for Surrey Police described.

"A 48-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to provide a specimen and failing to stop at the scene of a collision.

"A 32-year-old woman remains in hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries," they added.

Police have meanwhile launched a public appeal for information about the crash.
