Sutton MP Paul Scully has thanked post offices for their hard work during the coronavirus pandemic.

It comes as people across the UK have faced postal delays due to the unprecedented circumstances of Covid-19.

In the first few weeks of 2021, Royal Mail confirmed that some areas might experience a reduction in services due to "Covid-related staff absences".

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “Right from the start of this crisis, we have played a key role keeping the country connected.

"Every single letter and parcel is important to us. Like most organisations, we have a number of employees who are self-isolating in line with government guidance.

This has a direct impact on our staffing levels, especially in areas where there are higher levels of local outbreaks.

"We are working hard to deliver as normal a service as we can, drawing in extra resource and offering additional overtime where possible.

“We remain grateful to all our customers in these areas for their patience and understanding as our dedicated workforce work hard to deliver these exceptional volumes, whilst also adhering to necessary social distancing measures."

On Monday, January 18, Paul Scully wrote to postmasters, their staff and Post Office employees.

He said: "Following the busy festive season that has just passed, the dedication of Post Office workers across the country has been shown.

"You and your staff have come out in force to help your customers, providing essential services from banking to postage that have been so crucial in these challenging times.

I want to share my heartfelt appreciation to you and your staff for the efforts you have put in over recent months.

"Since March last year, postmasters and their staff have worked tirelessly to ensure vital post office services continue to be made available to communities across the country, providing a lifeline to customers and businesses.

"Your efforts continue to be greatly appreciated and valued.

"I know how tough these months have been on yourselves and your families and there are more challenging weeks ahead.

"Finally, I would like to thank you once again for delivering essential services and reassure you that the Government is doing everything it can tackle the virus."
